MARS (they/them)

Instagram

Mars Alexander is a non-binary transfem of Caribbean descent. By day they work on sets modelling or styling, and by night they’re a performance artist and entrepreneur– expressing and honouring states of freedom, queerness & hedonism. Mars grew up in Toronto and attended St.Michael's choir school at a very young age. They were trained in musical theory, sang with names such as the “Barenaked Ladies”, and performed at Massey Hall every Christmas. Yet, Mars always had their roots in otherness– they practised in circus arts and musical theatre during spare time, eventually dropping out of private school to become a raver. Your typical Mars show contains undertones of mental health, disturbance, fetish & symbolism. They work with foods & fluids as their main medium, using them to imitate innuendos, stories & nightmares.

What is the most important detail in your practice?

The most important detail in my practice is telling stories with bodies.
Stories about madness, stories about beauty, stories about defeat, or stories about fashion - anything that makes me or my community feel seen.
